• Sleep Apnea

    How can you tell if you have Sleep Apnea? Ask your spouse, family, or those around you. Here are some questions to ask: 1. Are you a loud, habitual snorer, disturbing your companion? 2. Do you feel tired and groggy in the morning? 3. Do you experience sleepiness and fatigue during the day? 4. Are you overweight? 5. Have you been observed to choke, gasp, or hold your breath during sleep? If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, you should discuss your symptoms with your physician. Blood oxygen saturation is reduced in the entire body during apnea -- sometimes producing serious irregular heartbeats and significantly reduced oxygen to the brain. Common symptoms of Sleep Apnea are a decreased ability to concentrate; loss of energy and/or fatigue; mild to marked depression; irritability; short temper; morning headaches; forgetfulness; anxiety; and, most frequently, excessive daytime sleepiness. • Other Sleep Disorders

    Some people suffer from nightmares, night terrors, sleep walking, excessive body jerks, or uncontrollable leg movements. These people often get less than four and one-half hours of restorative sleep -something our bodies need. Even though a person spends ten hours in bed, they may only get two hours of restorative sleep. It is important to have your sleep analyzed if you find yourself waking up more tired than when you went to bed. Read More

Recognizing the Need for

Independent Medical Evaluation

As the length of time an individual remains on disability increases, so does the likelihood he or she will never return to work. Therefore, it is in the best interest of claims adjusters, attorneys, and rehabilitative specialist to refer individuals for independent medical evaluation as soon as it is appropriate.

The following situations may indicate the need for an independent medical evaluation:

  • The attending physician finds total disability for more than eight weeks.
  • The patient remains out of work following an injury for more than six months without a reasonable explanation
  • A physician informs the patient that he or she is able to return to work, but the patient fails to do so or returns only to part-time status.
  • There is a suspicion of industrial or occupational causation.
  • The treatment program is rendered more than three weeks following the initiating event (e.g., an accident).
  • Any special diagnostic studies are requested, including thermography, EMG, nerve conduction evaluation or multiple magnetic resonance imaging studies.
  • The attending physician is treating beyond the realm of his or her specialty.
  • The patient is seeing multiple physicians or so-called doctor shopping.
  • Treatment is prolonged for extended periods of time, generally greater than eight weeks, for both physicians and other professional medical providers (e.g., chiropractor, physical therapist).
  • Situation that include a diagnosis of:
    • closed head injury, with suggestion of further evaluation and cognitive rehabilitation or there is a diagnosis of diffuse axonal injury, without objective evidence;
  • myofacial syndrome is diagnosed without objective evidence;
  • Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ) is diagnosed and further treatment or surgery is recommended.

Quality Assurance and Utilization Review

In today's world of health care delivery and with the rising cost of services, Utilization Review and Quality Management have become a necessary part of modern medical practice.

Medical Quality Management, Inc. (MQM) bridges the gap between treating physicians and our corporate and legal clients. By utilizing our large network of practicing physicians, MQM can provide fair and balanced evaluations that are sensitive to issues raised in evaluations.
